We have talked a lot about the Electronics Recycle Charity Drives, not just because they are helping to raise money for local non-profit organizations but also because they help the Florida environment. On Sunday, Jan. 30th The Star Banner of Ocala FL published an article on the eRecycle Drives Sun Digital has been conducting over the past couple of months. The article was called “eRecycle for a cause”, this article highlighted the events from a participant (donator) perspective and it was wonderful to see from their perspective how important these events are to them, as well as the community.
There was a quote that I believe puts a real-world business perspective to electronics recycling. Diane Barrineau, president of RM Barrineau and Associates, a Surveying and Mapping Co. in Ocala, FL, communicated that they need to continually update their computer systems and that it was a “no brainer” to bring the old equipment to the eRecycle Charity events. It is very true that businesses need to continually update their computer systems I do wish however that everyone shared the sentiment in it being a “no brainer” to responsibly dispose of old electronic equipment. The last survey conduct by the EPA showed that:
“In 2008 3.16 million tons of e-waste was created, only 13.6% was recycled and the rest was trashed-in landfills or incinerators“. Electronics TakeBack Coalition Summary of the 2008 EPA Survey.
There are many businesses in Ocala, Marion County and all over Central Florida who share Diane Barrineau view on Electronics Recycling, but the statics don’t lie and as a community this is an area of improvement for us all. Thanks Diane for being an inspiration for electronics recycling to others in our Ocala and Central Florida community, you get our Green IT Hero stamp for the month of January 2011!
